From article on Salem Church in the Hampshire Review of Aug .31, 1927: "The first person buried in the cemetery, was Benjamin Taylor, a tanner by trade, who tanned hides the old fashioned way at a tanyard on what is known as the Wills place near Higginsville."

From the "Glancing Back" section of the Hampshire Review of June 25, 1997, in the 100 Years Ago column a note from the June 9, 1897, Review states: "Our Capon Bridge corrsepondent says 79 loads of bark came to that town one day last week. Romney can beat that as there were 111 weighed on the scales here on Wednesday last and two or three others were not weighted."
