Topographical Benchmarks in Hampshire County

We are indebted to Ted Kalvitis for his article in the Hampshire Review of March 6, 2013 on one of the destroyed USGS Benchmarks of Hampshire County. There are in fact many benchmarks planted by various government agencies that have disappeared over the years. Therefore we are providing a list of benchmarks planted by the U.S.G.S. prior to 1974. Although they have been destroyed, the information contained in their descriptions sometimes gives hints of buildings, communities, roads or other places that no longer exist. Sometimes this may be the only hint of the former existence of such places. The information in these tables was generously given to us by Ted Kalvitas from documents supplied to him by the Department of Interior Geological Survey.

Interactive map of current benchmarks

For those who are interested in finding benchmarks which still exist there is an interactive map provided by the National Geodetic Survey (now part of N.O.A.A.) which locates them. The link to this map is: www.ngs.noaa.gov/NGSDataExplorer/. You need to zoom into the area of Hampshire County you are interested in and in the "Map Layers" menu on the left set the number of mile radius you want and click the "Find Marks" button. Once you have found a location, click on the "Datasheet" option and it will present a page of information on the location. There may be a link to "photographs" that will show you the location and the marker.

Below we give two tables of old location information.
